KRUSTA
A Greek-rooted pizza restaurant in Amsterdam, looking for a “mamma mia” name.
The itch
A Greek-rooted pizza bar launching in Amsterdam’s saturated food scene needed more than just a name; it needed a personality. The brief called for an identity that was Italian-inspired but locally edgy—an inviting space that felt instantly craveable.
The scratch
Specter Design Group brought us in for the naming and the narrative. We started with a non-negotiable truth: if the crust isn’t great, the pizza isn’t great. That insight became the foundation for the name KRUSTA.
Rooted in the Italian crosta and the Greek krusta, the word signals texture and appetite across languages. In Greek, the word also hints at a “warm shell,” perfectly capturing the protective, social space where people gather and unwind. We paired the name with the confident tagline: “The pizza experience.”
Then, the name pushed our creativity further by asking: What if we could capture the sound of the crust?
Specter, alongside a tech-savvy team, developed an algorithmic system that translates the frequency of a "bite" into dynamic visual expressions. This turned the literal crunch of the pizza into the visual language of the brand.
The relief
A multisensory brand experience that captures the pleasure of the perfect crust. KRUSTA has become a destination for both pizza and cocktails, standing out in the Amsterdam scene with a name that is as fun to say as it is to experience. And yes—we really love hearing the Dutch people say “Krrrusta.”
